Common Cat Health Issues

Allergies, UTIs, dental issues… these are some of the most common health problems people experience. But did you know that cats experience some of the same problems we do? It’s true! You don’t have to worry about human-to-cat transmission, and your cat won’t catch your cold when you’re sick, but it’s important to know the most common cat health issues – even if you’re already well-versed in the human versions. Here’s a closer look at some of the health concerns veterinarians have seen in cats that might sound familiar:

common cat health issues

#1 – Acne

Although most cats have plenty of fur that covers their skin, you might notice small pimples along the lower lip and chin. This is sometimes present alongside a secondary feline infection.

#2 – Anxiety

Just like humans, your pet can experience stress and anxiety. Symptoms in cats include:

  • Excessive chewing
  • Compulsive pacing
  • Repetitive grooming

#3 – Dementia

An illness brought on by cognitive dysfunction, your cat can experience dementia and may exhibit symptoms including:

  • Confusion
  • Forgetfulness
  • Excessive staring

#4 – Dental Concerns

Cats don’t get cavities the same way we do, but they do experience tooth resorption – a condition where the dentin in a cat’s tooth erodes and decays over time. Dental disease is another health issue that is seen in both humans and cats.

#5 – Diabetes

Signs of diabetes in cats include excessive appetite, increased thirst, more frequent urination, and significant weight gain or loss.

#6 – False Pregnancy

Cats who have not been spayed can sometimes show pregnancy symptoms, like lactation, without actually having engaged with a male feline. These symptoms are often related to a hormone imbalance. Consider making a vet appointment to let us check.

#7 – Immunodeficiency

An illness similar to HIV in humans, FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) may transmit in cats through a bite by an infected playmate or stray. Many cats with FIV are still able to maintain a long and otherwise healthy life.

#8 – Kidney Disease

One of the more common cat health issues is kidney disease. Cats diagnosed with kidney disease common present with the following symptoms:

  • Increased lethargy
  • Changes in litter box behavior (frequency, location, etc.)
  • Increased thirst

#9 – Thyroid Problems

An overactive thyroid is the most common glandular disorder we find in cats. If your cat is losing weight despite their abnormally ravenous appetite, a thyroid issue may be present.

#10 – Urinary Tract Infections

Urinating outside the litter box, with or without vocalization of pain during urination, is one of the most common ways your cat will respond when an infection is present in the urinary tract.

Is Your Cat Experiencing Health Problems?

When your cat starts acting in a way that differs from their normal behavior, it can be natural to react like you would if you started showing symptoms of illness yourself.

Since performing an online search or finding a symptom checker isn’t a fool-proof way of determining a diagnosis for your cat, it’s best to visit a local veterinarian when your cat is experiencing concerning symptoms.

The compassionate veterinarians at Catonsville Cat Clinic are here to help your cat stay healthy and happy through every stage of life, so give us a call to schedule a health checkup for your furry friend today.
